[mixtape] we’re all witches beneath the skin;

“Witches never existed, except in people’s minds. All there was in the olden days was women and some men who believed in herbal cures and in folklore and in the wish to fly. Witches? We’re all witches in one way or another. Witches was the invention of mankind, son. We’re all witches beneath the skin.”
― Ian Rankin, The Flood

a mix inspired by the amazing season of American Horror Story: Coven as well as witches and witchcraft in general.

[ l i s t e n ]

1. Cesar Davila-Irizarry – American Horror Story (Opening Credits)
instrumental track; I just love the eeriness of it and it’s the first thing you listen to at each episode!

2. Emilie Autumn – If I Burn
“doesn’t matter where you go or what you do cause if I burn, so will you”

original written as “a sweet little number about the witch burnings of 1645” [x]

3. Katy Perry feat. Juicy J – Dark Horse
“so you wanna play with magic? boy, you should know what you’re falling for”

AHS: Coven is all about the women; men don’t survive for long or are just a means to an end. Love is a rare thing and dangerous.

4. Natalia Kills – Problem
“but you know what they say about me… that girl is a problem”

pretty self-explanatory: all the girls are trouble in one way or another

5. The String Quartet – Voodoo
instrumental track

6. Fleetwood Mac – Rhiannon
“she is the darkness, she rules her life like a fine skylark and when the sky is starless”

Stevie Nicks said in an interview about this song: „And, um, so I wrote this song and made her into what I thought was an old Welsh witch. […] it’s just about a very mystical woman that is finds it very, very hard to be tied down in any kind of way“ [x]

7. Abney Park – Witch Cult
“the old religion, the cult of freedom and fertility; a witch cult, if you prefer“

I love how this is mainly an instrumental track with some weird mumbling you can’t fully understand. Gave me goosebumps the first time I heard it!

8. Lauren O’Connell – House Of The Rising Sun
„it’s been the ruin of many a poor girls – and god, I know I’m one.”

Cover of the original, slightly rewritten to fit AHS: Coven better and used in some of the teaser trailers.

9. Power Solo – Baby, You Ain’t Looking Right
“baby, I don’t wanna fight, I don’t wanna fight all night”

Actually used in the first episode of the first season; I still like this one because it implies that you can “see” witchcraft on a person and it reminded me of Cordelia and Hank’s relationship.

10. Saltatio Mortis – Merseburger Zauberspruch
“eiris sazun idisi, sazun hera duoder. suma hapt heptidun, suma heri lezidun, suma clubodun umbi cuoniouuidi: insprinc haptbandun, invar vigandun, invar vigandun”

a version of the first Merseburg Charm. It’s a “blessing of release” which translates to:

Once sat women,
They sat here, then there.

Some fastened bonds,
Some impeded an army,
Some unraveled fetters:
Escape the bonds,
flee the enemy

“The Merseburg Incantations or Merseburg Charms (German: die Merseburger Zaubersprüche) are two medieval magic spells, charms or incantations, written in Old High German. They are the only known examples of Germanic pagan belief preserved in this language. They were discovered in 1841 by Georg Waitz who found them in a theological manuscript from Fulda, written in the 9th or 10th century, although there remains some speculation about the date of the charms themselves.” [x]

11. E Nomine – Hexeneinmaleins (Interlude)
“Du musst verstehen, aus 1 mach 10 die 3 mach gleich, so bist du Reich.Verlier die 4, aus 5 mach 6. So sagt die Hex. Mach 7 und 8, so ists vollbracht. Und 9 ist 1, und 10 ist keins. Das ist das Hexeneinmaleins.”

12. E Nomine – Hexenjagd
“Hexe!! Es ist Zeit dich Schuldig zu bekennen. Wer mit dem Feuer spielt wird Brennen.”

The title means witch-hunt in German and that’s what this song is all about. Basically you hear a torturer talking to a possible witch, trying to make her confess.

13. Pete And The Pirates – Blood Gets Thin
“she behaves like she’s on fire”

Another song from the first season of AHS but it’s one which could be about a lot of the female characters – and the line above especially reminded me of Madison.

14. The Lovin’ Spoonful – Do You Believe in Magic?
“believe in the magic that can set you free”

a sweet song for Zoe and Kyle

15. Wonderwall – Witchcraft
“you have to know when a witch loves she looses her magic”

Loving the idea here of how a witch can loose her powers; reminded me strongly of Cordelia.

16. Bobby Bare – Marie Laveau
“down in Louisiana, where the black trees grow lives a voodoo lady named Marie Laveau”

Such an interesting and fun character in the series! This is one interpretation of her story.

17. Emilie Autumn – Fight Like A Girl
“there are more of US than there are of YOU, so show me your worst!”

AHS: Coven is all about women and female power so this song goes well with the overall theme.

18. Natalia Kills – Kill My Boyfriend
„Don’t make me break his heart in a million pieces“

This one reminded me of Zoe as well as Nan in a way.

19. Marina and the Diamonds – Homewrecker
“I’m only happy when I’m on the run”

Joan Ramsey probably thought of Nan as a homewrecker who only wanted to corrupt her son.

20. Kissing Cousins – Don’t Look Back
“baby, baby, don’t look back: you’re all alone”

This is actually from AHS 1×7 – it especially reminded me of the scene where Madison is sitting crying in the shower as well as how Zoe has to leave her home after the boyfriend incident but it could be the theme song for each witch once she enters the coven.

21. Hogwarts Choir – Double Trouble
“Something wicked this way comes.”

“John Williams took the lyrics from the famous scene in William Shakespeare’s Macbeth in which the Witches are around the cauldron and set them to music he composed for the films. One of the witches also says the phrase, „By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes.”“ [x]

22. Graveyard Train – Even Witches Like To Go Out Dancing
„there’s a rumor going ‘round: some witches just hit town”

It fits the young witches pretty well and Madison in particular at the beginning of the season.

23. Hannah Peel – Tainted Love
“Sometimes I feel I’ve got to run away, I’ve got to get away”

This song was used in some ads for the first season of AHS. I don’t know but for me the theme of tainted love seems to show up in every season of this show. Reminded me of Zoe/Kyle as well as Madison/Spalding.

24. Bloc Party – Hunting for Witches
“I go hunting for witches, heads are going to roll”

This is about witch-hunters in general; represented in the show by Hank and his father.

25. Mirah – Special Death
“a terrible mistake was made”

I just really like the soundtrack of the first AHS season! This is another song which fits for several characters; my favorite match would be Delphine LaLaurie.

26. The Sonics – The Witch
“Say there’s a girl who’s new in town. Well, you better watch out now or she´ll put you down, ‚cause she’s an evil chick. Say she’s the witch.”

27. Stevie Nicks – Edge of Seventeen
“said to my friend: baby, nothin’ else mattered”

The powers of the young witches seem to reveal themselves around that age; the change from girl- to womanhood.

28. Two Steps From Hell – White Witch (No Choir)

29. Subway To Sally – Die Hexe
“sie war schön wie der Tag doch jetzt ist es Nacht:
man hat schon das Holz für das Feuer gebracht”

A young woman is detected as a witch and her village prepares for her burning – the last verse is about the morning after.

30. Saltatio Mortis – Veitstanz

31. Nickelback – Midnight Queen
“I can’t get enough of the things that she does”

Reminded me of Hank and his love for Cordelia.

32. Nightwish – I Want My Tears Back
“Where are the sleepless nights I used to live for? Before the years take me I wish to see the lost in me!”

Totally Cordelia’s song at the end of the season!

33. Porcelain and the Tramps – My Leftovers
“Oh, you should’ve stayed home, you should’ve known better ”

Madison’s theme song before she gets killed the first time, a lot of the lines reminded me Fiona’s and hers interaction.

34. Two Steps From Hell – Witchburner

35. In Extremo – Merseburger Zaubersprüche II
“Ben zi bena, bluot zi bluoda, lid zi geliden, sose gelimida sin.”

a version of the second Merseburg Charm which fully translates to:

Phol and Wodan were riding to the woods,
and the foot of Balder’s foal was sprained
So Sinthgunt, Sunna’s sister, conjured it.
and Frija, Volla’s sister, conjured it.
and Wodan conjured it, as well he could:
Like bone-sprain, so blood-sprain,
so joint-sprain:
Bone to bone, blood to blood, joints to joints, so may they be glued

“The Merseburg Incantations or Merseburg Charms (German: die Merseburger Zaubersprüche) are two medieval magic spells, charms or incantations, written in Old High German. They are the only known examples of Germanic pagan belief preserved in this language. They were discovered in 1841 by Georg Waitz who found them in a theological manuscript from Fulda, written in the 9th or 10th century, although there remains some speculation about the date of the charms themselves.” [x]

36. Subway To Sally – Liebeszauber
“Abrakadabra – bald schon, bald schon bist du mein”

a sung love spell

37. ASP – Zaubererbruder
“…mit der Stimme uns Wünsche erfüllt und uns Träume gefangen…“

This song is actually out of the viewpoint of two witcher but I like it so much that it needed to get on this mix! They meet again after many years and mention among other things some of the stuff they did with their magic.

38. Mediaeval Baebes – Jennet’s Song
”“My mother is a witch. My mother told me they were all witches!”“

”Nine-year-old Jennet Device was an illegitimate beggar and would have been lost to history but for her role in one of the most disturbing trials on record. Jennet’s evidence in the 1612 Pendle witch trial in Lancashire led to the execution of 10 people, including all of her own family.“ [x]

39. Jen Titus – O Death
„O Death, O Death, O Death,
won’t you spare me over til another year?”

Madame LaLaurie, Marie Laveau and Fiona all have a problem with death. And with all the deaths in this season this song fits particular well.

40. James S. Levine – Lala Lala Song
…lala lala…

front cover:
Bruegel the Elder — The Seven Deadly Sins or the Seven Vices: Lechery (ca.1558) [x]

back cover:
Anonymous — Hort an new schrecklich abenthewr Von den vnholden vngehewr. A broadside on witchcraft in the Bishopric of Trier and elsewhere; with an etching depicting various scenes of witchcraft; and with engraved text in six columns (ca.1600) [x]
