High school seniors Aria, Emily, Spencer, and Hanna barely survived their most recent encounter with A. And it’s not over yet…. The police don’t believe there’s another, deadlier, A out there, but the girls know what-and who-they saw. If they don’t track down this final tormentor soon, A will silence them forever. [x]
Toxic is the fifteenth book in the Pretty Little Liars series – and if nothing changes the prelude to the finale book which is coming in December this year. By now it’s truly a guilty pleasure ride. I have lost count of how many times I just wanted to smack or shack some sense in the girls because they are just not learning from their mistakes… but it’s comfortable to return to Rosewood every once in a while and they still make for a fun and fast read.
“I surrender, Ali,” she said in monotone as she drove down the steep hill to the main road. “You win.” And that was a terrible thing to say aloud, too.
In the last book we learnt a lot about what Ali had been up to and what really happened with that girl in Jamaica… but of course she managed to get away again. Now Toxic takes place about two weeks after the last confrontation with their frenemy. No one believes them (naturally) that Ali is still alive and so the liars are practically on their own again. Now there are a lot of minor plots where I was just like ‘why don’t you tell? It’s gonna come back to you’ and ‚this is so obvious a trap I can’t even’ but okay, that has been the series ever since the twin plot reveal. The girls just don’t l e a r n. I liked the ideas for future careers for the girls – because they’re graduating now and all of them really fit well. Emily is the weakest plot like always but then again I don’t really stand her character after the baby arc… if it wouldn’t have been for the obvious ignorance of all four girls to actually not live up to their calling of pretty little liars, the book probably would have gotten a 5/5 simply for the ending. Mind? Totally blown! Okay, this is basically Ali pulling an Amy from Gone Girl – but how absolutely brilliant is that? And how difficult for the girls to escape that trap? I’m a bit scared whether Shepard will actually be able to squeeze that in one book in a satisfactory way… but can it please be the 2nd December already?
