Hasn’t everyone wondered what if? In this daring debut novel, Moriah McStay gives us the rare opportunity to see what might have happened if things were different. Maybe luck determines our paths. But maybe it’s who we are that determines our luck. [x]
Everything That Makes You is the story of Fiona Doyle and it shows two concurrent timelines for her: one in which she got scared in her childhood (Fiona) and one in which the accident never happened (Fi). Due to this their lives take different directions and they make different choices, yet at the core she’s the same girl.
It’s really intriguing to see how the story unfolds and how some things mirror the life in the other timeline and how some things take totally different turns. I really liked both, Fiona and Fi, although I preferred the ending for Fi… the writing is really good and I loved for how long we accompany the characters as it made their development much more realistic.
It would have been nice if there had been some kind of twist or major surprise though – the plot is pretty linear and especially one revelation is clear right from the moment the story arc is brought up. Also I halfway wondered whether the timelines would cross at some point but no, it stays strictly a mind game for the reader.
“It is who I am. That’s what I’m saying.”
He leaned forward, resting his forehead against hers. “Then be who you are.”
